First-Time Lip Filler Guide

You do not need to know anything about filler before your first appointment. You do not need to know which brand you want. You do not need to know how much filler you need.

You do not need to decide whether you want “Russian lips,” a half syringe, a full syringe, or any other treatment you saw online.

What do you want to change?

At LIPS NY by Rainforest Medical Aesthetics, we start with your existing lips, your facial proportions, your previous treatment history, and the result you actually want.

Then we determine whether lip filler makes sense.

First-Time Lip Filler Guide

What is lip filler?

Lip filler is an injectable dermal filler used to add or restore volume and, depending on the product and treatment plan, address aspects of lip shape, definition and proportion.

Many commonly used lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in human tissues.
Several fillers offered at LIPS NY have specific FDA-approved indications for lip augmentation.

Lip filler is a medical procedure performed with prescription-use products. FDA-approved dermal fillers are intended to be administered by licensed health-care professionals—not purchased online and injected at home.

What can lip filler actually change?

Lip filler may be considered when your goal involves:

More volume

— You want physically fuller lips.

More definition

— You want greater emphasis on the lip border or Cupid’s bow.

Different proportions

— You want to address the relationship between the upper and lower lip.

Selected asymmetries

— One area may have less visible volume or support than another.

Volume that has changed with age

— Your lips may no longer look the way they once did.

A subtle refinement

— You may want a change that is intentionally difficult for other people to identify.

Lip filler does not have one required “look.”

The treatment should be based on what you want to accomplish.

Can my first lip filler look subtle?

Absolutely—if subtle is the goal.

Not everyone walking into LIPS NY wants dramatically larger lips.

You may be thinking:

“I want a little more volume, but I don’t want people asking what I had done.”

“I like my lips. I just want them slightly more defined.”

“My upper lip needs a little more balance.”

“I want to look refreshed, not different.”

Those are legitimate treatment goals.

Subtle lip filler is still lip filler.

It is not a separate product or a special package.

It describes the degree of change you want.

What does “natural lip filler” mean?

It depends on the person.

“Natural” is one of the most overused words in aesthetic medicine.

For one patient, natural means:

“No one should know.”

For another:

“I want noticeably fuller lips, but I want them to fit my face.”

For another:

“I want to restore the volume I used to have.”

So we do not treat “natural” as one standard lip shape. Tell us what natural means to you. That gives us something much more useful to plan around.

What about Russian lips, heart-shaped lips and other trends?

Inspiration is welcome. Templates are not.

Social media has created names for countless lip styles:

Russian lips.

Doll lips.

Heart-shaped lips.

Keyhole lips.

You are welcome to bring photographs.

But the useful conversation is not:

“Can you copy these lips?”

It is:

“What do you like about them?”

Maybe it is the Cupid’s bow.

Maybe it is the upper-lip definition.

Maybe it is the ratio between the upper and lower lip.

Maybe it is simply the amount of volume.

Your anatomy still determines what can be achieved safely and proportionately.

Your lips don’t need a trend.

They need a plan.

What if my lips are naturally uneven?

Almost no face is perfectly symmetrical. One side of the lips may naturally sit differently from the other. One side may have slightly more volume. The Cupid’s bow may not be identical from right to left. The smile may pull differently on each side.

These differences do not automatically mean something is wrong. Filler may sometimes be used to improve a meaningful volume or shape asymmetry, but perfect symmetry should not be promised. Our goal is improvement when appropriate—not mathematical perfection.

We also evaluate how your lips move because what appears symmetrical at rest may change when you smile.

Lip filler pricing

Clear prices before treatment. Lip filler at LIPS NY is priced per syringe.

$399 per syringe
Juvéderm Ultra XC —
$649 per syringe

JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC  —

$649 per syringe
Restylane Kysse with Lidocaine —
$649 per syringe
Restylane with Lidocaine —
$799 per syringe
Juvéderm Volbella XC —

You do not need to choose the filler before your appointment.

Different fillers have different characteristics and approved uses. The least expensive product is not automatically the best choice for every lip, and the most expensive product is not automatically superior.

We choose the filler after we understand the goal.

How much filler do I need?

We do not decide that from social media.

You may see people discussing:

“half a syringe”
“one syringe”
“two syringes”

as though those amounts describe a finished look.

They do not.

The amount appropriate for you depends on factors including:

  • your starting anatomy;
  • your existing lip volume;
  • previous filler;
  • the product selected;
  • the area being treated; and
  • how much change you actually want.

At Rainforest Medical Aesthetics, filler is priced per syringe. But purchasing a syringe does not mean the objective is to inject as much product as possible. The amount placed should follow the treatment plan.

What happens at my first lip filler appointment?

Tell us what bothers you.

You can be specific:

“My upper lip is too small.”

Or very general:

“I just want my lips to look better.”

Both are fine.

We look at your lips at rest.

We evaluate visible volume, shape, symmetry, border definition, Cupid’s bow and upper-to-lower lip balance.

We look at your profile.

Projection matters too. A lip can look completely different from the side than it does from the front.

We watch you smile.

Sometimes what looks like a volume problem is partly a movement problem.

If your upper lip disappears mainly when you smile, a lip flip discussion may be more relevant than simply adding additional filler.

We review previous treatment and relevant medical history.

Tell us about previous filler, reactions, allergies, medications, medical conditions and anything else your provider asks about.

If you have active inflammation or infection around the planned treatment area, filler may need to be delayed.

We discuss the filler and price.

You should understand what is being recommended and what it will cost before treatment begins.

You decide whether to proceed.

A consultation should help you make a decision—not pressure you into one.

Does lip filler hurt?

Lip filler is performed by injection, so some discomfort is possible.

Several of the fillers offered at LIPS NY contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic intended to decrease discomfort associated with injection.

Your provider can explain what comfort measures are used during your treatment.

Pain tolerance varies from patient to patient.

The goal is not to promise that you will feel nothing.

It is to make the procedure as comfortable and controlled as reasonably possible.

What will my lips look like immediately afterward?

Probably not like the final result.

Lip filler can cause temporary:

swelling

bruising

redness

tenderness

firmness

small bumps or irregularity related to swelling

and

discomfort

Many of these reactions occur shortly after treatment and improve over time.

Do not judge your new lips in the treatment chair.

And do not assume that the swollen version you see later that day is your permanent lip size.

How much swelling is normal after lip filler?

Some swelling is expected.

Lips are highly vascular and can swell noticeably following injection.

The amount varies from person to person.

One patient’s swelling may be mild.

Another person’s lips may look considerably larger for a period after treatment.

Bruising can also occur.

The important distinction is between expected post-injection swelling and symptoms that may indicate a complication.

Your provider should tell you how to reach the practice if you are concerned about your recovery.

When should I worry after lip filler?

Rare complications need fast attention.

The most serious dermal-filler complication is accidental injection into a blood vessel.

Although uncommon, vascular occlusion can interrupt blood flow and cause tissue injury. Rare reported complications include tissue necrosis, visual abnormalities including blindness, and stroke.

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop:

unusual or severe pain;

vision changes;

skin near the injection site becoming white, gray or blue;

or

stroke-like symptoms such as sudden weakness, numbness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, visual change, severe headache, dizziness or confusion.

Those symptoms are not ordinary “wait for the swelling to go down” symptoms.

They require immediate medical evaluation.

Is lip filler safe?

Lip filler has known benefits and known risks.

FDA-approved fillers have been studied for specific indications and anatomical areas.

Common effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness.

Less common complications include infection, nodules, inflammatory reactions, migration and allergic reactions.

Rare but serious vascular complications can occur.

At LIPS NY, we believe cosmetic treatment should still be discussed as medical treatment.

That means talking about both what you hope to achieve and what can go wrong.

Safety should not be hidden in the fine print.

Lip filler aftercare

Follow the instructions you receive for your actual treatment.

Aftercare may vary depending on the filler, areas treated, technique, your medical history and what happened during the procedure.

In general:

Do not aggressively press, massage or manipulate the treated lips unless your provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Expect some swelling, tenderness or bruising.

Keep track of how you are feeling rather than judging only how the lips look.

Contact the practice if pain, redness, warmth, swelling or another symptom is worsening rather than improving, or if you develop a concern that was not expected.

Seek immediate medical attention for the vascular warning signs described above. Your individual post-treatment instructions take priority over generic advice from TikTok, Instagram, friends or internet forums.

Can I go to work after lip filler?

Many people return to normal daily activities relatively quickly, but looking socially “ready” is different from being medically able to function.

You may have visible:

swelling;

bruising;

redness;

or temporary asymmetry while swelling settles. If you have an important event, professional photograph, wedding or other occasion where your appearance matters, do not assume that treatment immediately beforehand will leave enough time for swelling and bruising to resolve.

First-time patients should especially avoid planning around a guaranteed recovery timeline. Your body gets a vote too.

When will my lips look settled?

There is no single day when every patient’s filler suddenly becomes “final.”
Initial swelling generally improves over time.

Product-specific clinical data can help set expectations, but individual responses vary.
The same-day result is not the settled result.

That is also why standardized before-and-after photographs should document when the after photograph was taken.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler is temporary—but there is no universal expiration date. Most commonly used lip fillers are gradually absorbed over time. For Juvéderm Ultra XC lip augmentation, clinical-study labeling reports that the result lasted up to one year in the majority of study subjects.

That does not mean every patient will have exactly the same result for exactly twelve months.

Duration can vary according to:

product;

amount;

treatment location;

individual tissue characteristics;

metabolism;

and treatment history.

“It lasts exactly one year” is too absolute. We discuss expectations for the specific product selected for you.

When should I get more filler?

Not simply because the calendar says so. Some patients prefer to maintain their result. Others wait until substantially more filler has been absorbed. Some decide they do not want additional treatment.

Repeatedly adding filler without reassessing what remains can lead to unwanted volume or a result that gradually moves away from the original goal. Every repeat treatment should start with another look at your lips. Do not assume yesterday’s treatment plan is automatically today’s treatment plan.

What if I don’t like my filler?

Don’t panic—and don’t automatically add more. If you are unhappy because the lips are swollen immediately after treatment, remember that swelling can temporarily distort the appearance.

If the concern remains after the appropriate healing period, have the lips evaluated before trying to “fix” them with additional filler. For certain concerns involving hyaluronic-acid filler, treatment with hyaluronidase may be considered.

At LIPS NY:

Vitrase filler dissolving/correction — $300

Not every unwanted filler result needs dissolving, and not every type of filler responds to hyaluronidase. Evaluation comes first.

Lip filler vs. lip flip: what if I am choosing the wrong treatment?

You do not have to choose correctly.

That is our job to evaluate.

Lip filler adds physical volume.

A lip flip changes upper-lip muscle activity.

If you like your lip volume at rest but your upper lip seems to disappear when you smile, a lip flip may deserve discussion. If your lips are physically smaller than you want them to be, filler is the more relevant treatment category. If you have both concerns, both can be evaluated.

Lip filler from $399 per syringe

Your First Lip Filler Questions

Do I need to know which filler I want?
No. Tell us what result you want. Product selection comes after the evaluation.
Juvéderm Ultra XC is currently $399 per syringe.
Yes, subtle enhancement can be the treatment goal. Whether filler is appropriate and how much change is reasonable depend on your starting anatomy.
No treatment should promise perfect facial symmetry. Filler may improve selected volume or shape differences when appropriate.
“Russian lips” describes an aesthetic approach or technique rather than a universally superior result. We choose treatment based on your anatomy and goal rather than assuming a named trend is appropriate for everyone.
Swelling varies considerably. Some patients experience mild swelling while others develop a more noticeable temporary increase in lip size.

You will see additional volume immediately, but early swelling means the same-day appearance should not be treated as the final result.

It depends on the product and patient. Juvéderm Ultra XC clinical data showed effects lasting up to one year in the majority of study subjects, but individual duration varies.

Certain hyaluronic-acid fillers may be reduced using hyaluronidase when medically appropriate. Dissolving filler is itself a medical treatment and is not appropriate for every filler material or every concern.

FDA-approved lip fillers have established safety data for their approved indications, but all dermal filler procedures carry risks. Common reactions include swelling and bruising, while rare serious complications include vascular occlusion, tissue injury, vision loss and stroke.
Contact the practice if you are concerned. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual or severe pain, vision changes, white/gray/blue skin near the treatment site, or stroke-like symptoms.
